The nonprofit sector is in constant flux, with some new entities being established or incorporated every week, and others disappearing. Each year from 2017 to 2021, Benefacts reported on trends in nonprofit births and deaths in its annual nonprofit sector reports.

Various public registers were used to build the population and source the data – mainly, the Companies Registration Office (CRO), the Registrar of Friendly Societies, the Revenue Commissioners (Revenue), the Charities Regulatory Authority, the Department of Education and Skills, the Library of the Houses of the Oireachtas and the Standards in Public office Commission.

Four datasets are provided as separate files:

Financial data derived from the published reports of X,XXX incorporated nonprofits* between 2013 and 2020
The legal objects clauses derived from the constitutions of X,XXX nonprofits
The State expenditure data for 2020 reported in Benefacts Funders Directory
